Impacts of Homeland Security Critical Industry Designations

My thesis explores the economic impact of Homeland Security’s critical industry designations on the United States’ manufacturing sector. It examines how these designations influenced employment, output and trade, comparing critical and non-critical industries to assess their resilience and contribution to national economic stability.

  • Critical Manufacturing’s Role: Highlighting industries such as metals, machinery, and chemicals as essential to national security and resilience.
  • Policy Impacts: Examining how the designation affected economic performance in critical industries and the unintended consequences for non-critical sectors.
  • Supply Chain Vulnerabilities: Analyzing how global interdependencies and disruptions underscored the importance of these industries.

Research Approach

Using a longitudinal dataset spanning 2001–2023, I applied a difference-in-differences (DiD) event study methodology to measure the effects of the 2013 designation

  • Data Sources: Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns, Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. International Trade Commission, and supplemental DHS reports.
  • Key Findings: Insights into the disparities between critical and non-critical sectors, and how the designation influenced economic equity and resilience.

Significance of the Research

     This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how national security policies intersect with economic systems. By focusing on the tangible outcomes of the 2013 DHS designation, it offers valuable insights for policymakers tasked with balancing national resilience, economic equity, and growth.
